  2. and leader of the United Malays' National
  3. Organization (UMNO). His `look east' economic
  4. policy emulates Japanese industrialization.
  5. Mahathir bin Mohamad was elected to the House
  6. of Representatives 1964 and gained the
  7. support of the dominant UMNO's radical youth
  8. wing as an advocate of economic help to
  9. bumiputras (ethnic Malays) and as a proponent
  10. of a more Islamic social policy. Dr Mahathir
  11. held a number of ministerial posts from 1974
  12. before being appointed prime minister and
  13. UMNO leader in 1981. He was re-elected 1986,
  14. but has alienated sections of UMNO by his
  15. authoritarian leadership.
